The Eden Project Cornwall

As one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, Cornwall certainly has a lot to offer. From its beautiful sandy beaches to its temperate climates you won’t be disappointed by a stay in our Cornwall holiday cottage .

In tourist terms Cornwall really does have it all and we are sure that if your stay in one of our Cornwall holiday cottages is your first, then it certainly won’t be your last. Ask anyone and they will confirm that there is just something about Cornwall which makes you want to come back again and again. The relatively new Eden Project is just another reason to fall in love with what Cornwall has to offer.

The brainchild of Tim Smit, who was previously the driving force behind the restoration of the popular tourist attraction Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project is   described as 'The living theatre of plants and people'. This time the team led by Tim Smit created something totally new: two huge biomes or greenhouses, as they are more commonly known. One biome has been specially created to house a tropical rainforest climate, while the other is set to a temperate climate. Inside both biomes are plants which have been imported from around the world, as well as some locally-grown plants. These two eco-friendly biomes near St Austell, carved into the remains of a disused clay pit, are easily accessed from your Cornwall holiday cottage.

The Eden Project was established as one of the landmark Millennium projects in the UK to mark the year 2000 and is structured as an educational charitable trust. The project's mission is quoted as being to 'promote the understanding and responsible management of the vital relationship between plants, people and resources, leading towards a sustainable future for all.' The two biomes are home to an amazing 100,000 plants representing 5,000 species from many of the climatic zones of the world.

St Michael’s Mount

If you decide to rent one a Cornwall holiday cottage from COTTAGES-BY-THE-SEA you will find a wealth of culture on your doorstep, including the wonderful St Michael’s Mount.

St Michael’s Mount captures the romance and magic of the area surrounding the Cornwall holiday cottage you can rent from us. This medieval castle and church, located at the top of a craggy island which is accessible by the causeway when the tide goes out, provides tourists with a dramatic coastal attraction, not to be missed.

It is thought that during the Iron Age St Michael’s Mount was originally the site of a tin port. However it wasn’t until the fifth century that the Mount is first recorded as being a place of pilgrimage, due to the fact that Saint Michael was seen in a vision over the mount by various groups of people. By 1135 a Bendictine Monastery was founded on St Michael’s Mount and lasted until Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500’s. The buildings on the island were built at the same time as the monastery, dating back to the twelfth century.

During its long history the Mount has been a priory, fortress, a place of pilgrimage, finally becoming a private home to the St Aubyn family in 1659. In 1954 the St Aubyn family formed a partnership with the National Trust, which led to the grounds being opened up to the public. St Michael’s Mount has been a well-visited tourist attraction ever since.

Now home to 25 residents and with its own church, harbour, restaurants and gardens St Michael’s Mount is certainly worth a visit. You can choose to either walk across the causeway at low tide or take a boat trip across at high tide. On some days you can even see seals and dolphins in the waters surrounding the Mount.

The Minack Theatre in Cornwall is every theatre-lover’s dream as it combines an excellent selection of plays and musicals with breath-taking panoramic views. Built above a gully, the Minack theatre is the open-air theatre brainchild of Rowena Cade and combines a Roman amphitheatre design with an ocean backdrop, making it well worth a visit.

The History of the Minack Theatre

The story goes that Rowena Cade offered a group of local actors wanting to perform The Tempest, the back garden of her house called Minack Cottage as she thought it was perfectly located on a rocky outcrop by the sea to provide the right setting for the play. In fact minack is the Cornish word for “rocky” and so perfectly describes the location. The success of the 1932 production in Miss Cade’s back garden led to her devoted efforts to improve the theatre. While the theatre began as a "garden project", it has developed over the years into a world-famous venue. 1976 the theatre was registered as a Charitable Trust and began to be run by a local management team.

The Minack Theatre of Today

The Minack Theatre in Cornwall now performs 16 plays and musicals ranging from Shakespeare to Gilbert and Sullivan as well as modern productions, from May to September and is enjoyed both as a theatre and a wonderful tourist attraction. Once a decade there is a performance of The Tempest, in memory of the first play presented there. It is totally open to the elements and so adequate clothing and sun cream is highly recommended.

Charlestown in Cornwall

Charlestown in Cornwall is just one of the picturesque towns you will be able to explore from the comfort of our Cornwall holiday cottage. Below we have a closer look at Charlestown.

When you stay in our Cornwall holiday cottage you will find a wealth of culture and history on your doorstep. The Georgian new town of Charlestown, with its Shipwreck and Heritage Museum, is definitely worth a look.

Charlestown, near St Austell, is a pretty little working port known in Cornish as Porthmeur. It is well known for its wonderful turquoise-coloured waters which is due to the particles from the china clay which can be found there. Named after the local landowner Charles Rashleigh, whose vision helped create Charlestown’s new town design, Charlestown was originally built as a means of a trading port, exporting China Clay from the local quarries. This trade still continues today and a few times a month local fisherman export china clay. Much of the local architecture in Charlestown remains unchanged, making it an interesting record of the Georgian era in Cornwall.

Charlestown is also a popular destination for its other attraction: the Charlestown Shipwreck, Rescue and Heritage Centre. The centre is built over the old china clay tunnels and tells the story of Charles Rashleigh who realised that a small fishing village with an inhabitance of only nine could be transformed into a port trading in china clay. The Audio Visual Theatre found in the centre outlines the fascinating story of how this transformation was realised, the port’s growth to trade in pilchards, tin, stone and coal and eventually its decline. With an estimated 250,000 shipwrecks off the UK’s coasts the Centre also aims to relate the story of British shipwrecks through photography and salvaged cargo.
